*This book is a nest of dark shadows: new autumnal poems from the Pennsylvania landscape; a wild fantasy of the liberation of Poland by rebellious pianos; the author's usual attacks on politics and organized religion; and several works of whimsy and satire. Factsheet Five called this "Fantastic, rebellious poetry!" There's also an unusual departure, the poet's first formal, rhymed poems (two sonnets and a longer poem in quatrains) in nearly 20 years.

*One of Greenwich Village's most widely-published poets delights and stirs the reader once again with a big new book -- a garland of poems in memoriam for the poet's folk-singing daughter, counter-poised with poems about her own life-long love for the piano and lore. Striking narrative poems recount the poet as a child prodigy, studying with a grand master in long-gone Chautauqua summers. The others recount the sad fate of her daughter, in heart-rending expressions of loss, anguish, and remembrance.

  • This drama, based partially on letters, poems, and texts of America's greatest horror writer, is a penetrating psychological and literary portrait of the Providence-born writer who deserves top ranking among all horror writers since Poe. This play takes you into Lovecraft's study as he reflects on his life and writing in the last year of his life. The author's insane mother and estranged wife make an appearance, along with various phantom voices who read passages from his writing. This play was performed twice in Providence during the Lovecraft centennial year. Additional text in this volume includes, "At Lovecraft's Grave," an elegy written for the 50th anniversary of Lovecraft's death, and several other HPL-related poems. 250 copies were printed, with a handful in hardcover.

Early Books Printed and/or Published by The Poet's Press

Since we started out as a combination printer and small press publisher, the earliest books from the press are a mix of books we edited and selected for publication, and some books produced as commercial printing. A small number of these are regrettable, some are merely mediocre (good practice anyway as we got better at book design and typography). We have long ago turned away from author-subsidized books -- in the beginning our rationale was that the awful books paid for the good ones, and some of the best poets we knew were living at starvation wages, or no wages, and somehow, we found a way to use the shop to help the poets we admired and liked. Certainly nobody made any money from this. Among the titles that might turn up, of which we would say only, "We printed that," are:

  • Louis Newman: Tear Down the Walls. (1973)
  • Louis Newman: Burn, Yellow Candle, Burn. (1972) We printed two books for Newman, a thoroughly nasty man.
  • Ferdinand Campbell: A Souvenir of Love. Halfway through producing this book we discovered plagiarized poems in the mix and removed them. This was a commercial printing project only, and the author never paid us.

Some books we produced for others (poetry and non-poetry projects) included:

  • Anon: Exotic Indian Cuisine. A nice little book of Indian recipes. A pleasure to print, and I still use it.
  • Film Musical Quarterly, Issues 1 & 2. A fanzine devoted to film musicals. A pleasure to produce.
  • Kenward Elmslie, ed: Z. An anthology of St. Mark's poets. A compendium of writing mostly so awful that I still shudder to think of it.
  • Milstein, Stuart, ed. The Tenth Muse Anthology. 1973. 64 pp. Printed offset at The Poet's Press.
  • Bruce Gerig. European Suite. 1975. Catalogue of an exhibit of drawings from an international exhibition tour 1970-1975. Printed for Studio 3000 by The Poet's Press.
  • Robert Carothers, ed. Wrenches. A collection from Edinboro State College, PA.
  • Debut. Literary Journal for Edinboro State College, PA. 1973 issue.
*Wrenches. Literary magazine for Edinboro State College, PA.
*George Behrman. Metopes and Triglyphs.
*Ree Dragonette and Dennis Sivack. Apogee.
*Yves Barbero. High-Energy Physics.
*George Flynn. The High Ground.

*Expatriate Review.
The press also printed newsletters, broadsides and posters for The Mattachine Society, the Gay Activists' Alliance, the West Side Discussion Group and other gay organizations and publications. For a time we were almost the only printer in Manhattan willing to print for gay liberation organizations.

Where has The Poet's Press been located?

  • New York City, founded in 1971 at 668 Avenue of the Americas
  • Brooklyn, New York, in Boerum Hill and later in Vinegar Hill
  • Weehawken, New Jersey, at Bonn Place, and later, at Columbia Terrace
  • Providence, Rhode Island, intermittently from 1985 through mid-2015
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from mid-2015 to present

A different Poet's Press was founded in 1969 in New York City by poet Diane Di Prima, who then moved to the West Coast. When we registered The Poet's Press in New York City in 1971, we were unaware of the DiPrima operation. From time to time we are asked about titles that were produced by the "other" Poet's Press. For the record, we have never been located in California, so any Poet's Press title with a California imprint, or pre-1971, is most likely from this earlier press.

There was another Poet's Press in Ohio that vanished after a couple of years, and we are occasionally confused with presses having similar names. The chronology and bibliography in this wiki should clarify once and for all which books are ours. The Poet's Press name was registered in Pennsylvania in October, 2015, following our move in August.

Where Are Poet's Press Books Archived?

The Harris Collection at Brown University Library, Providence, Rhode Island, has the largest collection of Poet's Press books.
A set of Poet's Press books was donated in the 1990s to Poets House in New York City, and they have many of our recent titles. Their library is not an archive, however, and some of our books on display there have disappeared.
A current set of Poet's Press books, and a set of some archive copies, was donated to the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in July 2015.
The Baron-Forness Library at Edinboro University, Edinboro, Pensylvania has some Poet's Press titles in their special collections, as well as early productions by Brett Rutherford from his student days at the University.
The Special Collections room at The Carothers Library at University of Rhode Island, has a large collection of past and present Poet's Press books.
